You could only imagine my joy this weekend when I walked into a craft night themed Saturday at Mom’s house! She’d seen crafts online where you melt crayons to make crayon wax pumpkin decorations and some where you glue glitter onto them. So, we ended up doing a little bit of both and even mushing them together into something colorfully crafty.
Crayon Wax Pumpkin Supplies
Gather these supplies in-store of browse my conveniently linked suggestions and you’ll be ready to go!
- Pumpkins (suggestions below)
- This multi pack is PERFECT for a group (and those sparkly stems!)
- Multiple white 6″ pumpkins
- Large white pumpkin
- Crayons
- Depending on the size of your project you may want to buy multiple of the same pack to have more of your colors
- This multi pack is under $10, very cost effective for this project
- Mod Podge
- Glitter
- Craft paint brushes (these are the BEST on Amazon!)
- Blow dryer (this one is a good, inexpensive one if you don’t own one)
- Table cloth to catch wax spatter (but make it festive)
Crayon Wax Pumpkin Tutorial
- Lay down your festive table cloth to prep for crafting.
- Peel the colored crayons that you want to use.
. - Adhere the crayons to the pumpkin with Mod Podge using a craft brush where you want the colors to drip down.
. - Allow the Mod Podge to dry, for about 20 minutes, or more if you use a heavy amount. I actually stuck mine in the fridge for about 10 minutes to help speed it up!.
. - Once your Mod Podge is fully dried, begin blow drying the crayons on low, carefully. It WILL make a Blue Man Group-was-here level mess, but that’s why I stress the importance of a table cloth to work on.
. - While drying, we focused on one color crayon at a time, keeping the heat on low at first to let the crayons get soft. Once a little melted we moved to high heat to really get them melting down the sides.
. - Once the wax dried, we added glitter to the stem and down the sides with Mod Podge one color at a time. This will keep the glitter from sticking to the wrong sections.
To generally contain the glitter, I recommend using a cookie sheet/pizza pan, or even the same drop cloth you used for the wax melting if it’s not too dirty.
Finished Crayon Wax Pumpkins
My large, Halloween colored glitter pumpkin and mini orange and green glitter are below. My mom made a cool little glitter number with just black and silver glitter that’s also pictured. I’m loving the variety of what we all made!
Mom also made a rainbow colorful glitter larger pumpkin similar to mine.
My sister had a cool take on a more true to color larger pumpkin with sparkly black glitter running from the stem. Love it!
Bonus DIY: Glitter Pumpkins
No crayon/wax melting required here. We wanted to make glitter only pumpkins on the smaller ones. I’m guessing this was the much easier option as opposed to melt the wax on the smaller space. Mom and I made a couple of Halloween and fall-inspired mini pumpkins with the glitter as you saw above.
Mine took on a more ‘realistic’ pumpkin form which carries well into harvest season even after Halloween passes.
