One of my favorite cold weather treats is a Starbucks white hot chocolate. The white chocolate spin on the classic hot cocoa drink comes about because most of their chocolate menu items are too rich for me. So, I opted for their something on the less rich side which brings us here.

Like every other food I find myself ordering regularly, I became curious about a cheaper homemade version. I checked the Starbucks website for this drink’s ingredients and it’s essentially just milk and white chocolate syrup. After that confirmation, I knew this could be done at home.

White Hot Chocolate Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup white chocolate chips (can sub with 6 oz white chocolate shavings)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cups of fat free milk (or milk of choice)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Andes mints (optional)
White Hot Chocolate Recipe

Making My White Hot Chocolate

  1. Mix the 4 cups of milk, 2 tsp of vanilla extract, and 6 oz of chocolate chips in a medium saucepan.
  2. Set flame to medium heat, do not let it boil.
  3. Occasionally stir with a whisk to ensure even mixing, and that it’s not melting into one lump and burning.
  4. Once the chocolate is completely melted, turn heat off and pour into mugs immediately, do not let it sit.
  5. Optional: top with whipped cream and Andes mints.

What were your thoughts? It’s pretty simple, right? Have you ever tried a white hot chocolate or do you stick to the classic milk chocolate hot cocoa? Would love to hear your favorite variations in the comments!
