Have you ever had this simple delicacy as a child? We used to make them all the time. For whatever reason, the fact that they were a hot sandwich made them such a treat! My hot ham and cheese sandwich recipe makes enough for the whole family to enjoy and takes all of 10-15 minutes to make.
Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwich Ingredients
This recipe yield six sandwiches, making this a perfect way to meal prep for the week!
- 1/2 pound of deli ham
- 1/4-1/2 pound of Swiss cheese
- 6 Italian rolls (~6″ size)
- Butter
Making Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
Be prepared for the easiest assembly ever!
Before we get assembling, pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees.
First, split the Italian rolls in half. Butter both halves of the rolls on the inside.
Then, layer on 2-3 slices of your deli ham and 1 slice of Swiss cheese. You’ll likely use all of the ham but have some leftover cheese. I find you don’t need as much cheese typically, so save those leftovers for your regular sandwich lunches!
Once your sandwiches are fully assembled, wrap them in tinfoil and put them on a baking sheet. Then, place them in your heated over for about 10-12 minutes, enough time to warm the sandwiches and crisp the rolls slightly.
Luckily, these aren’t very sensitive so you don’t run a big risk of burning them. So, if you cook the full 12 minutes or a few longer, they’re likely still going to come out just fine.
Your Finished Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwich
I promised you this was an easy recipe, right? To me, your sandwich is ready if not perfect when it looks just like this one below. The cheese will be gooey and melted but not necessarily burnt.
Pair this delicious mini sub with a side of wavy chips, kettle chips or any number of delicious picnic favorite sides. I’m normally someone who’s drawn to a lot of flavor, but these wavy chips with this sandwich are tops for me. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
