For Kevin’s birthday, I told him to pick whatever he’d like for breakfast in bed. French toast is one of his all-time favorite breakfasts, but he doesn’t regularly have it, so this was the perfect time to really treat him. Having never made it though, I did a little research and created my own French toast recipe just for the occasion. Knowing Kev has a big appetite I decided to make it on Texas Toast, for a more filling, substantial homemade French toast experience.

French Toast Brunch Sausages

Anyone who enjoys French Toast needs to give this recipe a try, it’s both easy and cost-effective (and boasted as the ‘best French Toast I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a LOT’ by Kevin himself). Talk about a gleaming recommendation!

Texas Toast French Toast Recipe Ingredients

You may find most of these in your fridge/pantry already, but what isn’t won’t cost you around more than $10.

French Toast Ingredients
  • 10 slices of Texas Toast
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar*
  • 1 tbsp regular sugar
  • 2 pinches/shakes of salt, to taste
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon, plus additional for topping
  • Powdered sugar for topping
  • Syrup for topping

*per Kevin, brown sugar versus just regular sugar seems to be the differentiating factor in this recipe now being his all-time favorite, so be sure you have this key ingredient!

Making French Toast on Texas Toast

  1. Combine all ingredients except for the bread, syrup and powdered sugar in to a shallow pan/dish. Whisk until mixed well. Watch out for big clumps, particularly with the flour.
  2. Turn the stovetop on medium heat and spray the pan you’ll be using. You’ll want the surface hot before you put the toast down.
  3. Dip your slices in the batter, briefly on each side, removing excess with your finger over the batter dish before placing on the stove. If the bread sits too long it’ll absorb too much batter and weigh down the bread, making it hard to get to the stove (trust me).
Cooking French Toast on Stove

Optional: Sprinkle a but of cinnamon on the uncooked side while the toast is on the stove. In my opinion, adding it just to the batter wasn’t enough flavor for us. Add it to your taste preference or leave it out if you don’t think it’s necessary!

Homemade Texas Toast with Sausage

Repeat all steps until all slices are coated and cooked. Then, top with syrup and powdered sugar to taste and serve with something delicious (like maple breakfast sausage) or on their own!

French Toast Recipe Final Product

Kevin’s birthday breakfast was served with some Simply Apple and breakfast sausage patties (in bed, of course). Add your special touch and this meal is ready for a birthday breakfast in bed (these festive toothpicks are inexpensive and easy).
